This thesis is a study on the infant baptism. It begins with several questions: What is the meaning of baptism? Does adult baptism differ from infant baptism? Should infants be baptized without their decision? Why is infant baptism an important sacrament of the Roman Catholic Church? And finally, most Reformed Churches criticize the Roman Catholic doctrine of infant baptism, yet these same churches practice infant baptism. The Anabaptists deny the doctrine and practice of infant baptism. Then, is infant baptism a biblical doctrine? Two different theological perspectives of infant baptism emerge as represented by J. Calvin and K. Barth. The former accept this teaching, but the other latter denies it. The baptism consists of water’s baptism and Holy Spirit’s baptism. By Barth Holy Spirit’s baptism comes first, and then water’s baptism follows. In other words, he says the baptism of the water should be practiced after the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
