Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether different job characteristics in general hospital nurses were associated with psychosocial stress, and whether these potential associations were moderated by various factors such as shift work, education levels, income, domestic violence and home environments. Background: Nursing is associated with high levels of job strain and heavy workloads. Changing working conditions and missions raise importance of investigating job stress, burnout, job satisfaction and lifestyle and its consequences for general hospital nurses. Method: A samples of 374 nurses in 15 general hospitals were interviewed using questionnaires regarding job characteristics, job stress and musculoskeletal symptoms. Results: As a result of factor analysis for work characteristic, tow factors were extracted to work related-patient treatment (WRPT) and non patient treatment (WRNPT), and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for each factor were 0.664 and 0.771, respectively. The stress level had significantly higher in nurse compared with the other occupations. ERPT and Job stress correlated that they were significantly positive correlation with job demand and control, occupational climate and total stress score, and WRNPT were also significantly correlation with job demand and control, organization system and total stress score. Multiple logistic regression analyses indicated that job stress was significantly associated with WRPT (odds ratio=1.223, 95% confidence interval=1.068-1.401) and violence (odds ratio=0.440, 95% confidence interval=0.228-0.848). Conclusion: The job stress is significantly associated with work characteristic and exposure topsychological violence in general hospital nurses. Application: The results of this study might help to reduce the job stress of general hospital nurses.
