The purpose of this study was to identify the changes of muscular function in the knee joint after application of knee flexor strengthening program(KFSP) during 12-week-winter training period, and to present the basal data for development of muscular strengthening program for prevention of injury and improvement of athletic performance. Participants were 15 male in-line roller speed skaters, and assigned to middle school group(MI, n-S) and university group(UN, n=7). KFSP was applied to both groups for 12 weeks, 4 times per week, 23~36 minutes per day. Muscular function in the knee joint was repeatedly measured with isokinetic dynamometer before and after application of KFSP. As a result, all muscle strength and power related variables except dominant-side flexion peak torque were tended to be decreased in MI. In UN, all muscle strength and power related variables were tended to be increased. Dominant-side flexion peak torque and average power, and dominant-side ipsilateral balance ratio were significantly increased(p<.01) in post-test. All muscle endurance related variables in both groups showed the positive changing tendency. Dominant-side extension and flexion fatigue index were significantly decreased(P<.05) in post-test. In conclusion, KFSP in this study was effective in the improvement of muscular function and ipsilateral balance ratio in UN. And it is suggested that KFSP after puberty should be more effective than that during puberty. Ipsilateral balance ratio in pre-test suggested that intervention program for prevention of sports injury in in-line roller speed skaters should be introduced.
