Royal-family women in the 19th century frequently communicated with figures outside royal family through Korean-alphabet letter. The letter, which was sent by royal-family woman, has private character in a sense of having given and received between individuals. However, its contents were ever shared actually by many people. Accordingly, the letter is mentioned diverse contents from delivering well-being and personal emotion of royal-family figure to collecting political judgment and opinion. Thus, this study made discussion by dividing royal-family women’s Korean-alphabet letters into ‘communication for delivering well-being and confirming relationship,’ ‘communication for sharing blood relation and emotion,’ ‘communication for offering information and collecting opinion,’ and ‘communication for appealing a trouble and solving a case,’ depending on aspect of communication.
Diverse aspects, which were indicated in letters of royal-family women in this period, are associated basically with what a role of royal-family women had been expanded with entering the 19th century. Sunwonwanghu(純元王后:queen), who sent letter, is a character "Who performed Suryeomcheomjeong(垂簾聽政) over 2 times. Queen Myeongseonghwanghu(明成皇后) was a political partner of King Gojong. Even the letter, which was known to be sent by a court lady, consists of the contents, which make it guessed for political walking in a family of the Queen Myeongseonghwanghu at that time. Thus, royal-family women are judged to have played a political role with communicating letter based on blood relations with a figure outside royal family. Consequently, the royal-family women’s letter in the 19th century is characteristic in a sense of having been closely associated basically with the political and cultural phenomena in this period.
