This paper investigates of Martin Bucer’s soteriology with sepcial reference to his doctrines of predestination, vocation, and glorification. By Martin Bucer(1491-1551) the order of salvation(ordo salutis), beginning in predestination and ending in glorification, represents not a chronological sequence, but a logical one, even if predestination clearly precedes the others, as glorification, on our use of the term, follows them.
The doctrine of predestination is one that shapes the whole of Bucer’s theology. Predestination expresses a division men into elect and reprobate, an irrevocable division that rests on God’s free decision. Negatively the doctrine of predestination denies that man’s works play any part in his salvation; positively it affirms that man’s salvation depends totally on God’s free election.
It is especially the text “many are called, but few are chosen”, which leads Martin Bucer to distinguish a general and a particular vocation. The general vocation is that by which all men are called, whether or not they be elect. This call discloses the truth of God. Particular vocation is the vocation by which the elect are called. At the moment the Lord calls, the real work of the Holy Spirit in illuminating, persuading, and kindling takes place. The outward word is ineffective until the Holy Spirit persuades the heart, but it is nevertheless through the word that the Holy Spirit works. His final glorification is God’s declared intention in electing him, which God cannot break without being untrue to Himself. The completion of God’s purpose lies beyond this life. It belongs to the last day.
