For decades social psychologists have been studying the effects of group membership on individual performance and the difference between individual and group performance. Two phenomena within this area that have recently received considerable attention are social facilitation and social loafing. Social facilitation studies have been concerned with the effects of an audience or of a coactor on individual task performance. Recent work on social loafing has dealt with the impact on individuals' motivation of their performing collectively, as a group, rather than as individually identifiable performers. Each of these areas of study and their relevant theories are reviewed and then a new theoretical model of group task performance(cognitive-motivational model) is proposed which can encompass each of these lines of research. Connections between the cognitive-motivational model and past and current research are discussed. Much more precise and systematic research is required to evaluate its various components and to increase its predictive power.
