The purpose of this study is to identify the academic oral/aural English needs of Korean and Chinese international students, two of the largest Asian student groups perceived as being reticent in class, at tertiary levels in the U.S. The questionnaire for task-based needs survey was created with 12 possible oral/aural tasks through unstructured interviews. 151 Korean and Chinese students participated in online survey in which they were asked to rate on a 5-point scale how they perceive 1) the importance of every 12 oral/aural task for academic success and 2) the difficulty of accomplishing in class every 12 oral/aural task. The findings showed that listening skills are perceived as more crucial than any oral skill and formal presentation as the most difficult. Quantitative and qualitative information from surveys were addressed in interpreting the results. In a further attempt to see any differences according to academic disciplines, English proficiency level, and L1, significant differences in the students" responses were found. Based on these findings, several suggestions were made for course material and design aimed at improving academic oral/aural skills in Korean and Chinese students.
