The epistemological question, "What is true?" is crucial for the development of educational theories. Epistemology or epistemological questions are dynamic and fruitful terrain for many significant educational ideas. Based on a comparison of the French Jacques Maritain??s and American John Dewey"s epistemological perspectives, this paper presents valuable insights for Christian education and practical theology from two very different philosophers. Maritain"s epistemological approach makes an important influence on Christian education but Dewey"s contribution affects far more diverse ways including the Teaching for Understanding Framework and practical theology. In close relation to the philosophy of G. F. Hegel, Dewey rejects either/or dichotomies and provides an appropriate method for examining education and curriculum. His dialectical method emphasizes inner and outer, mind and body, a valuable balance for Christian education, emphasizing both mind and body with inner experience and environment. His concern for social environment and emphasis on the partnership between student and teacher in the context of education allows us to readdress the aim of education.
