A substantial body of research in ESL contexts has investigated how L2 learners participated in Content-Based Instruction (CBI) classes. So far, however, there has been little discussion about EFL students’ participation in CBI classes in EFL contexts. This paper reports on a case study that investigated Korean learners’ willingness to communicate (WTC) in two EMI courses of one content. The study took a form of action research focusing on the issue of how to enhance EFL college students’ participation in the EMI classroom. Through the analysis of self-assessment questionnaires administered two times, and an in-class writing task, the results showed that a significant percentage of the students had positive views on EMI in Korean higher education and that students’ perspectives on EMI were not associated
with their level of participation in EMI classroom. Interestingly students’ perceived language proficiency was not strongly related to their level of participation in the EMI classes. The study made suggestions regarding how course instructors and universities can help students to actively participate in EMI class interaction.
