This paper examines the argument between advocacy and opposition of Korea"s Free Trade Agreement(FTA) with the European Union(EU). The free trade pact between South Korea and the EU came into effect on July 1, 2011, ushering in a new era of expanded economic and political ties that can benefit all countries.
The EU"s automobile and Korean agricultural sectors are the most sensitive issues (industries). Under the agreement, Korea and the EU would eliminate or phase out tariffs on 96% of EU goods and 99% of Korean goods within three years after the accord takes effect. They have also agreed to abolish tariffs on most industrial goods within five years of the agreement taking effect. The FTA deal between South Korea and the EU would help raise Korea’s market share in the European market.
However, free trade is often opposed by domestic industries that wuld have their profits and market share reduced by lower prices for imported goods. Socialists frequently oppose free trade on the ground that it allows maximum exploitation of workers by capitalists. "Free trade" is opposed by many anti-globalisation groups, based on their assertion that free trade agreements generally do not increase the economic freedom of the poor or the working class, and frequently make them poorer.
In this paper, Section II analyses the backgrounds of the Korea-EU FTA. Section Ⅲ and Ⅳ examine the argument between advocacy and opposition of Korea"s FTA with the EU, and suggests some measures to improve the effectiveness of future FTAs. Finally, conclusions are provided in Section V.
