‘Holiness" is a crucial issue in Christianity since the holy God commands his people to be holy. With this order the church has understood itself as ‘ecclesia", the people who were called out of the world, and emphasized separation or differentiation from the world. However, the ecumenical understanding of the church tends to emphasize unity or commonness with the world considering the world as a context where God himself is working. So the ecumenical view of the church is different from that of the traditional one. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the ecumenical view of the church in terms of ‘holiness."
With this purpose this paper sought first the meaning of ‘holiness" from the bible and the reason why God commanded holiness to his people. I found out that the major goal of ordering holiness is to use Israel as a tool of mission to the world, making the whole world to know and have fellowship with the holy God.
Secondly, I investigated the major characteristics of ecumenical understanding of the church in terms of ‘holiness." While the traditional one emphasizes differentiation of the church from the world, the ecumenical one tends to point inclusiveness of the church in the world. Also it tends to seek holiness in the world, while the traditional one seeks it in the church largely. In addition, it seems to understand the duty of the church as actualizing the holiness in the world, while the traditional one as expanding the holiness from the church toward the world.
Thirdly, I evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the ecumenical view. It is evaluated that the ecumenical one contributes to expanding the concept of holiness beyond the boundary of the church to the world. Also it helped the holiness which stayed largely inside the church become a major source of changing the world. However, it also showed a weakness of losing the identity of the church and the power of transforming the world to become holy as it tears down the wall between the church and the world too much. When this weakness is overcome, the ecumenical view would become a desirable understanding.
