The history of migration begins with the origins of mankind in Africa, and ever since human beings have always moved in search of new opportunities or to escape poverty, conflict or environmental degradation. Thus, migration mattered through history, and continues to matter today. But migration has garnered little attention in the field of history until recently.
Why then does migration matter now? The answer is there are more international migrants today than ever before, affecting every states on earth. In an age of globalization, however, migration becomes easier and people become more mobile. Many migrants have durable relationships of a political, economic, social or cultural nature in two or more societies at once. This can be seen as threat to the undivided loyalty of the sovereign nation-state. Migration also results in a level of new cultural diversity, which often brings into question about national identities.
Additionally, international migrants are fundamentally transforming social, political, and economic structures within homelands and places of settlement. As such, historians of migration have recently begun to rewrite the history of human life, changing scholarly paradigms. Key concepts such as networks, gender, race, structure, agency, and migration systems are explained and historicized to produce a complex picture of migration in a globalized world. In this respect, this study finally suggests a new way of thinking about ‘others’ in “the age of migration”: “Cosmopolitanism,” and “politics of recognition” lead us to embrace and co-exist with ‘others’ with an open mind.
