This paper is a review essay of In Search of an Alternative to American Exceptionalism, written by Professor Young-Soo Bae, an American labor and social historian. Reviewing his book, this paper discusses the important issues covered in the book, evaluates its strengths and weaknesses, and suggests the incorporation of other related theses.
Professor Bae explored American Exceptionalism in three categories: labor and class in American society, business and government, and America in the globalized world. His analyses in these areas led to the conclusion that America has been an extreme form of empire.
His thesis is intriguing and suggestive, but not free from limits. First of all, the book is mainly based on accessing other historians’ works, and therefore takes the form of a review, which limits a more concrete discussion of case studies. Other elements that might have strengthened the book include: continued discussion of labor and labor-business relations into the post second world war era, changes or continuances of American diplomatic policies, and the significant lack of an American social welfare system.
