Focused on Adorno’s early, unpublished essay titled “Theses on the Language of the Philosopher”, the present article is intended to reconstruct his primary conceptions of anguage on the basis of the material, historical, and dialectical character of his approach to language so as to provide a framework that offers the core terms of his perspective and critique of language. That short text written by Adorno in 1930s is important not only because problems that continue to occupy Adorno throughout his whole life can be identified in it, but also because the main elements of his critique of language are already present earlier on. Especially a question that becomes decisive for Adorno’s later work, that is, the ‘convergence of art and knowledge"is posed in Adorno’s “Theses” essay.
I try to demonstrate thematically that for Adorno the material, historical, and dialectical approach to language centering around the relation between thing and word is elaborated in the contrast Adorno draws between ‘significative"and ‘configurative"language. With this, it can be thematized in and through Adorno’s thought to seek for the alternative philosophical language. The thinking of Adorno, I suggest, may contain implicitly a kind of particular linguistic turn as well. To put it another way, we might say that there is an implicit language philosophy in Adorno, what Albrecht Wellmer nicely have called ‘buried treasure’.
