In his entire life, Gweon Guen aspired to become a successful governmental official, yet he was also constantly concerned about his health, and was worried of his own laziness and his escapist tendency. His sickness made him rather passive, and because of such attitude he did not act or spoke about social problems actively.
Gweon Guen often thought about social problems, and believed that behind certain problems there were Kings and officials who did not do their job. He also admitted that he himself did not fulfill his responsibility as much as he could have during his career as a governmental official, but he did not give up as well, and maintained his dream to become a successful officer.
However, he was fairly discouraged for the first time in his life when he was sent to exile at the age of 38. Gweon Guen reached a fairly high rank in his career, yet he was disappointed by that and that frustration almost pushed him into a hermit’s life. But at the same time, he always dreamt of going back to the Gaegyeong Capital city to meet his friends. His mental stress made him depressed, yet he become a person who could adapt himself to the present circumstances.
After Joseon was founded, he became a successful officer. King Tae-jong(太宗) appointed him to high positions in the government. He tried to become a loyal servant of the king. Then Gweon Guen went deaf when he was 54, and after that, he contemplated upon his life in the past. Finally, he tried to find his self-identity as an officer of Neo-Confucian.
