Purpose: The purpose of this ethnography was to understand the meaning and the patterns of terminal care experienced by the nurses at hospice?\palliative care units. Methods: The key informants were the 11 nurses from hospice?\palliative care units in a hospital. The iterative field work was conducted from May 2010 to March 2011. The data were collected using interviews and participatory observation. The data were analyzed according to Spradley"s taxonomic analysis, partially relying on critical discourse analysis and proxemics. Results: The patterns of terminal care by nurses at hospice and palliative care units could be classified into active integration, analysis centered, subordination to power, obedience to destiny, dependency on intuition and self-centered nursing approach, depending on how given physical and social situations, the nurses were finding out the resources, setting up the focus of care and taking and practicing the solution strategies. Conclusion: This study will play an important role in pointing out the most fundamental problem on practicing the sacred terminal care services and the dignified death of terminal patients, suggesting a role model as a skilled expert on terminal care to the nurse.
