This study researched poverty and diseases in the rural town of Kakiri in the middle region of Uganda, Africa. Rural medical care services were analyzed through a resident survey and Ugandan governmental documents which suggests hygiene alternatives to prevent diseases and improvement of medical care services.
According to the contents of Uganda’s survey, the various diseases of rural Uganda were divided into chronic adult diseases and tropical-endemic diseases. For the treatment of these diseases, public medical care services were absolutely required. About 69% of respondents visited the medical facility to treat various diseases. The rest could not visit the medical center because of the economic element of low income and geographical element of long distance. Although visiting the medical center, about 74% of visitors were unable to receive medical services because of the problems mentioned above. The Kakiri people wanted health and medical related facilities most among various requirements.
As a result, adequate medical care services and ODA policies are needed to prevent and cure diseases in rural Uganda. First, at the micro level, substantial support should be delivered to the poor according to demand in Kakiri. Second, at the macro level, a good program should be established linking the treatment of diseases, poverty alleviation, and economic development. Third, the roles of KOICA and medical volunteers should be considered for the establishment of medical facilities, support of medicines and medical machines, setup of medical education systems, and rearing of medical human resources.
