Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by common recurrent painful ulcerative lesions of the oral mucous membrane with spontaneous remission. Its etiology is still not elucidated and treatment modalities for RAS are empirical and experimental. This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of RAS and the characteristics of clinical course in Korean dental profession population. Three hundred and sixty-eight individuals including dentists and dental school students (male 226, female 142) answered to the questionnaires and the following results were obtained. 53.5% of the female subjects and 50.9% of the male experienced RAS, and overall prevalence was 51.9%. The most frequent site was the labial mucosa, followed by the buccal mucosa, ventral surface of the tongue, and others. 49.6% of the lesions disappeared within one week, and 60.9% of the subjects with RAS reported recurrences at intervals of a few months. RAS seemed to have positive relationships with familial history. The most frequent predisposing factor relating to the development of RAS in this group was emotional stress (80.0% in RAS positive subjects).
