The purpose of this paper is to investigate the maternal fantasies of Gertrude and Hamlet’s repression on Ophelia in Hamlet in light of Freudian psychoanalytic feminism, which focused on the relation between the fantasies of the pre-oedipal maternal and the male subject constitution. Hamlet has the fantasy of maternal power in a variety of forms. Hamlet struggle to overcome his fear of the maternal power
through the identification with his father and the father’s idealization, only to fail. with Hamlet’s defensive system collapsing, Hamlet is governed by the engulfing mother, her sexuality functioning as the poisonous weeds, and the threatening mother in his fantasy. Unfortunately Hamlet’s fantasies about Gertrude’s soiled inner body make him repress Ophelia. Hamlet projects Gertrude’s contaminating maternal body onto Ophelia, and even he transforms her into a cold, static form like jewelry through the masculine fantasies. In short, the Shakespearean dramas deal with the maternal fantasies and female repression by the male subjects in his own ways. All this results from the male subjects’ anxious unconscious upon which the construction of the male subject depends.
