This is a thorough analysis for the four bronzes and their inscriptions cast by a ruler of Ying state (Yinghou 應侯), Shigong 視工. As for the dates of the vessels, the author proves that the late Western Zhou dating of King Li is more reasonable. Another important point the author notes in the article relates with the possibility for the interconnected reading of the four inscriptions proposed recently by He Jingcheng 何景成. He suggests the following order based on the contents and calendrical marks of the inscriptions: The king’s Wine festivity (xiangli 饗醴) for the ruler of Ying before the command to attack the Southern Huaiyi in the Yinghou Shigong gui 應侯視工?, The Ying ruler’s successful campaign against the Southern Huaiyi in the Yinghou Shigong gui gai 應侯視工?蓋 and the Yinghou Shigong ding 應侯視工鼎, and finally the Ying ruler’s audience to the royal court to receive the king’s award in the Yinghou Shigong zhong 應侯視工鐘.
However, the author finds that in the Western Zhou bronze inscriptions the king usually holds the Wine festivity to praise his subjects after their merits. The calendrical evidence He Jingcheng noted further contradicts with the fact that the king traveled an average of about ten kilometer per day. Finally, the audience at Zongzhou 宗周, the main capital, had a special symbolic meaning for regional rulers so that it is unreasonable for the Ying ruler to travel more than 500km to receive awards for the successful campaign.
Therefore, it is very difficult to accept He Jingcheng’s seemingly interesting interconnected reading of the four inscriptions. The inscriptions rather demonstrate the importance of the Ying state as a base for controlling the southern region in the late Western Zhou period. They further shows the active roles played by Shigong, the ruler of the state at that time.
