The biography on a person of the Goryeo period was written in various types of media: Jolgi of Goryeosa or Goryeosajeolyo, the Biographies of Goryeosa, the memorial inscription, monuments. Uicheon the Daegakguksa was a prince, and appointed as the national monk, so there are lots of biographies about him. As he was a prince, his story was reoorded in the chapter of Uicheon in Goryeosa. The author of the chapter wanted to minimize the aspect of monk of Uicheon. The name of Uicheon’s tomb was written in order to let all the people know his religious achievement and the dignity of the royal family. In addition, the monument, Yeongtongsabi, paying a tribute to Uicheon was established in the Yeongtong-sa, and it has the most concrete description about Uicheon. On the other hand, Seonbongsabi was constructed by the followers of Cheontaejong, and they aimed at keeping taking over Seonbong-sa by doing so with a cause of inheriting the achievement of Uicheon. Interestingly, bolh of Yeongtongsabi and Seonbongsabi just focused on his achievements as a monk and did not make a mention aboul his Jujeon policy or the construction of Namkyeong at all. Like this, each of the authors of the biography of Uicheon wrote differently aboul the life of Uicheon or put an emphasis on some parts of the life of Uicheon because each of them had a different purpose. Therefore, we should read the biographies of Uicheon as taking these characteristics into account.
