This research aims to evaluate the 14 syntactic complexity measures as indices of language development in writing by college-level learners of English in Korea. The 14 syntactic complexity measures in 238 essays retrieved from the Yonsei English Learner Corpus were analyzed with a web-based automatic syntactic complexity analyzer. This research investigated whether or not genre has an impact on syntactic complexity in learners’ writing, how the patterns and the magnitudes of development are different between levels and how related the measures are to each other. The results have shown that genre has an impact on syntactic complexity in the written products. 9 measures of syntactic complexity were found to be statistically significant between levels. Of them, 5 were shown to be linearly developed, whereas 4 exhibited nonlinear development. The 13 pairs of the measures were observed to have strong correlations to each other.
