How can a teacher prepare for a bible class? How can she/he lead and evaluate a class which is reliable and effective in theological aspects as well as educational perspective? In dealing with these questions, a number of religious educators in Germany have developed a model of “elementarization” since the 1980s. This model, as I argue in this paper, will provide the foundational contents in the world of the Bible and theology. Furthermore, in this model attention is directed to student’s everyday life experience and how they perceive and understand the Bible. With the double devotion to the “content” on the one hand and the “person” on the other hand “elementarization” aims to catalyze and cultivate living encounters between students and biblical messages. It offers an open situation in which students as the subjects of the learning process communicate with the Bible.
In the history of the Religious Education in Germany there has been certain misunderstanding of “elementarization”. It was often falsely supposed that for less intellectual students, the theological and biblical contents should be simplified. Against this narrow and false understanding K.E. Nipkow and F. Schweitzer suppose five dimensions of elementarization: The instructional content, for example biblical texts (elementary structures), the experiences which make up the experiential background of the texts; the experiences which represent pupil’s everyday and vivid life-experiences (elementary experiences), the understanding in developmental and biographical terms (elementary accesses), the truth claims from the religious traditions and on the part of pupils (elementary truths), and the elementary methods which may support meaningful religious learning.
In the context of Korean Christina Education the “bibliodrama” reveals itself as a effective learning process in which both “the person” of pupils and “the content” of the Bible communicate dramatically with each other. The five dimensions of “elementarization” can support the praxis of the “bibliodrama” and vice versa, so that didactical theories and experimental practices stay in complementary cooperation.
