This article was prepared to explore the military significance of Gungye’s 905 Cheolwon relocation. Previous studies have understood that this event was motivated by the Gungye regime to establish autocratic kingship by disengaging itself from the system of warlord alliance with major powers of Paeseo region. Also, it was also speculated to have generated from the political aims to annex Shilla or to achieve complete sovereignty by transferring from the Shilla-oriented old capital.
However, Cheolwon relocation of Gungye regime actually was executed to actively operate the ‘unification wars of the Later Three Kingdoms’, by effectively utilizing the strategic values of infantry and cavalry by taking the momentum of Naju conquest of 903. Along with the relocation, Gungye regime carried on the mission to energetically encroach on Shilla territory by using infantry and cavalry of inland Cheolwon region to eventually fulfilling such ends.
In the midst of Gungye constantly coveting on Shilla, interference of Baekjae was inevitable, which led to the transformation of warfare’s pattern and nature. Cheolwon relocation marked a turning point as the whole military and national strategy changed from mutual battles of the three kingdoms to a single state ultimately overwhelming the rest towards unification.
Meanwhile, relocation was possible only after defence system was constructed that can securely link Chelowon with Songak, Paeseo and Cheongju areas. It was also attributed to Cheolwon being the ideal location to operate infantry and cavalry, so that Shilla penetration became more viable, as well as possessing rich economic potential.
