In this study, other-repeated first-person-pronoun-wo repetition is examined: one speaker’s use of repetition is repeated by the next speaker on his/her turn. Other-repeated first-person-pronoun-wo repetition is analyzed in conjunction with other interactive strategies, such as rhetorical strategy, syntactic features, phonological features, and gaze, as a way to negotiate stance and establish intersubjectivity bctween co-participants.
In producing the adjacent wo repetitions, thc speaker aligns with both the prior activity and the prior topic (her conversation with Speaker C); at the same time she can make a contribution to the current activity and current topic (her storytelling to Speaker A).
By showing that within the speech of two speakers othcr-repeated first-person-pronoun-wo repetition produces unique interactional functions as a discursive strategy, this paper shows a new perspective on Chinese pronominal use and stance should be analyzed not just trom the perspective of an individual speaker, but from the alignmcnt between more than one speaker.
