King Eui’ja-wang was proclaimed as the Crown-prince and Successor of the sitting king, in the 33rd year of King Mu-wang’s reign. His eventual enthronement was made possible by the power of formidable members of the Sa House, which included Queen Sa’taek who was sort of a mother figure to Eui’ja-wang, as well as General Sa Geol(沙乞). But even with their support, his throne was far from stable, especially in the early days of his reign. So he staged a political purge and eliminated all his political foes, which included the Iksan faction.
Eui’ja-wang displayed a foreign policy which was very much different from the previous one designed by his former political enemies. After ascending to the throne, Eui’ja-wang maintained an amicable friendship with the Chinese Tang(唐) and the Japanese Wae(倭), and established peace with Goguryeo. Such policy direction was an extension of the Eui’ja-wang’s faction’s earlier efforts, which originated in the later days of King Mu-wang’s reign. The invasion of Shilla in the 24th year of Mu-wang, orchestrated by the Pro-Eui’ja-wang(pre-enthronement) faction, clearly signals that Eui’ja-wang was to maintain a hostile stance toward Shilla, even after he was enthroned.
However, during Eui’ja-wang’s reign, another political shift occurred. We can see that from the records of the 15th year of his reign, documented in 『Samguk Sagi(三國史記)』. These changes were brought about because Eui’ja-wang needed to strengthen his leadership, while new political forces such as Eun’go(恩古), Sang’yeong(常永) and Chung’seung(忠勝) had their own agendas as well. And most importantly, these political changes resulted in changes in the direction of Baekje’s foreign policy. Baekje established a more active relationship with the Japanese Wae, in the period of the Taika-Seiken(大化政權) regime, through the Taika-Kaishin(大化改新). In the meantime, with a peace treaty signed with Goguryeo, relations with Tang deteriorated, and was eventually in severed in 652.
