To-Jung Lee, Ji-Hham(1517~1578) was a well-known scholar during the mid-Chosun dynasty but left a few pieces of work behind. Out of his poems, "Cha-do-jung-jeul-gui-geo-rae-sa" contains a wide range of content in its long form that the consciousness of the writer can be looked in depth. In order to understand To-Jung from his writing, this piece of poem must be studied.
The work in question copies the rhymes of Do, Yeon Myung"s "Gui-geo-rae-sa". However, the consciousness of To-Jung shows wide differences to the concept of returning home in order to spend the remainder of one"s life, free from worldly affairs. In the depth of this poem, there lies more than what words on the surface express; it contemplates upon the fear and the disgust of the writer towards the contradictory political reality of the time. It can be said that, as he witnessed the contradictions of the era, he retrospects into the innate
human nature, and his determination for the future composes the theme of this poem. The above characteristics of this work are all the more unique if one compares it with the work of Do, Yeon Myung. This result is due to the differences in the writers" experiences and influenced by the period of creation.
The main theme in To-Jung"s poem can be summarized as "freedom from worldly limitations and living carefree in the natural world, according to one"s innate nature" and "suppression of desire". These two themes are what To-Jung"s nature was close to and what he, in fact, practiced in his everyday life.
Moreover, it is likely that this poem was written after To-Jung"s close friend Ahn, Myung-Se"s work was indicted.
