This paper describes a robust landmark matching method to reduce ambiguity of candidate of landmark. General robot system acquires the candidate of landmark through vision sensor in outdoor environment. Our robot uses the omni-directional vision system to get all around the view. Thus, the robot obtains more candidates of landmark than the conventional vision system. To obtain the candidates of landmark, robot uses the two types of feature. They are vertical edge and merged region of vertical edges. The former is to extract the vertical line of building, street lamp, etc. The latter is to reduce ambiguity of vertical edge in similar region. It is difficult to match the candidates of landmark within the region where the repeated vertical edges exist. In our previous work, we have known the difficulty of landmark matching by using of vertical edge where similar regions are appeared. Thus, our approach is to merge the vertical edges which it have short interval in the region. This reduces the ambiguity of landmark matching. When the robot moves forward linearly, robot can know his distance because he decodes wheel motion. In the case, the robot detects the candidates of landmark and corresponds them to find the same candidates of landmark. Therefore, robot is able to compute the relative distance and azimuth between robot and matched landmarks. In experiment, the robot performed more robust matching performance two types of feature than only vertical edge.
