In this paper we introduce a HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) system for the development of industrial robotic motion controllers. As an example of its application, we present a development of a collision detection algorithm for an industrial robot. It is one of possible ways that one develops motion control algorithms directly on the ready-to-sell controllers or its prototypes if the algorithms are relatively simple. But, the needs for the high quality of robot performance made the control algorithms complex and difficult to develop and implement. Also there are needs for on-time development of practical solutions to control problems. The HILS system can be an effective solution to these problems. We use the HILS system as a high-speed prototyper for efficient development of robot control algorithms. A series of works like design, simulation and test of control algorithms are fulfilled on the HILS system, and finally implemented on the real robot system of end product type. Accordingly there is no need to concern about the burdens of implementation on the real robot system during the development process which goes with many repetitive trials for successful development. As application of the HILS system to development of high-speed collision detection algorithm between industrial robot and its environmental objects is shown. The application shows a usefulness of the HILS system as a design and test platform of robot motion control.
