This article probes the possibility of studying religious landscape in the view of new cultural geography. Landscape has been studied by a number of scholars involved in the study of religion. There is a discipline called the “geography of religion”. Nevertheless, within the study of religion, the study of religious landscape, unlike ritual, thought and other concepts that have been central to the discipline, has yet attracted great attention.
As geography started paying attention to landscape, it has a long history of landscape studies. Carl O. Sauer’s geographic research emphasized how a certain cultural group could transform a physical landscape into a cultural landscape. Since the 1980s a group of British geographers known as the promoters of “new cultural geography” severly criticised Sauer and the Berkeley school for not exploring the theoretically informed explanation of the mechanism behind the morphology of cultural landscapes. Now new cultural geographer regard landscape as a text and a way of seeing.
Landscape is defined as the portion of land that human beings can comprehend, and it is represented and reproduced in various reasons. Thus the study of religious landscape should focus not only artificial structures such as buildings but also the meanings given to them and the mechanism that created these meanings.
The reason I focus on sacred places in religious landscape is that these sacred places reflect people’s attempt to invent religious memory and identity. Thus, I elucidate the reason why religions build sacred places and their representations in landscape, that is, the role that landscape plays in remembering religious memory. I examine the messages that sacred places intend to convey to the followers through the created landscape. Sacred places are significant because it reflect important symbolic features of religion. Sacred places are vehicles for remembering the religious memory and reinforcing various memories.
