To improve the cleanliness of an automobile engine, the engine cylinder head is raised up in an water tank until the cylinder head comes out completely above the surface of water during washing process. The debris such as burr and chip were flushed with water from the cylinder head in the washing process. The present study aims to investigate numerically the washing process by 3-D transient CFD simulation. To consider the relative motion of the rising engine cylinder head from the water tank, the water was discharged through the bottom boundary in the computational domain while the cylinder head was not moved. The two-phase interfacial flow in the water tank was simulated by using the VOF method. The results showed the details of flow field inside the cylinder head by visualizing particles passing through the complex flow passages. The relationship between the rising speed and washing performance was obtained from the present numerical results, and the effects of discharge direction of water were also discussed. The numerical method in the present study might be applicable to improve the overall performance of washing process for the automobile parts that have complex flow passages.
