It is said that Saul Bellow is a typical modernist in spite of the fact that he vigorously has attacked modernism writers such as Ernest Hemingway, Samuel Beckett and Jean-Paul Sartre. Of course, Bellow was much owed to the modernists including James Joyce. The contradictory statements provide us a clue to understand his viewpoints of art and the responsibility of a novelist.
As Daniel Fuchs argued, “The central thrust of Bellow’s fiction is to deny nihilism, immoralism and the aesthetic view. Existentialism finds Bellow an adversary.” He doesn’t deny their contributes to stylistic forming of modernism. Also his narrative device mainly depends upon psychological analysis. This kind of methodology is greatly used by most modernism writers.
In a sense, the violent movements against modernism has made him a virtuoso of modernism. He, however, is basically a real humanist as well as the alienated in Western mainstream community. This could give readers an explanation why he has been an anti-modernist and an oriental somehow.
