This paper re-composed the pedigree of Academism of the historiography academia including japanese colonial historiography and national historical studies, especially, examined arguments involving ‘scientific historiography’. Japanese colonial historiography during Japanese occupation was carried oul by the professors of National History Dept., Tokyo Imperial University and Gyeongseong Imperial University under the influence of Orienlal History (Manseonsa) series. Korean historical scholars engaging in historical research of literatures are directly influenced by them, and Baek Namn-un was also connected by academical genealogy. New Marxists who graduated from Gyeongseong Imperial University were involved in academical disputes in 1930’s. Like this, the fact that historical scholars doing historical researches of literatures and some Marxists are directly or indirectly related to institutional Academism requires re-recognition of the then current dispute structure when Joseon Studies movement was carried out in the 1930’s. Especially, from the aspect of ‘scientific historiography’, new scholars strongly raised a problem to nationalism scholars such as An Jae- hong, et al. Since Choi Nam-sean, nationalism scholars also have not denied scientific historiography, but they were negative, This accords with flow of Western historical studies, From the historicism of Ranke, there has been an effort for making history independent branch study, and historical materialism was also resulted from such an effort.
In the meanwhile, it is noteworthy that historicism of Ranke, which had great effects on Korean and Japanese academism historical studies, was linked to the national power. Japanese imperial university started as such ‘national academism’, In case of Joseon colonized by Japan, Koreans raised complaints to Gyeongseong Imperial University, established for national acadernism, for the discrimination, however, in the meantime, it seems Korean have a vague attitude toward the study established by the national support, Similar phenomena can be found in historical study, The Joseon press had various complaints with respect to Joseonsa Pyeonsuhoe as national academism, However. a lecture of Joseon history, writing aclivities, Joseon studies movement, etc, bore in mind activities of Joseonsa Pyeonsuhoe, and it is difficult to say that essential criticism was given to the character of national academism related to activities of Joseonsa Pyeonsuhoe.
