This article studied the implication of Nitobe Inazo’s publication of Bushido on Japan’s image in the early 20th century America. Nitobe’s book has been widely read in the West ever since its initial print in 1900. Most in the West regarded it as a book of the highest authority on Japan’s traditional Bushi ethics and culture. However, it was Nitobe himself who constructed the image of Bushido as a traditional ethical principle by writing Bushido.
Nitobe’s purpose in writing Bushido was to change Western image of Japan from a weak oriental nation to a strong and fully modernized one. In particular, Nitobe wanted to explain Japan’s growth as an imperialist nation by depicting Japan as a nation led by Bushido principles like loyalty, dedication and military strength. That is why he published the book in English through an American publisher.
Responses to Bushido in America were mixed. Nitobe’s book became very popular in America becoming one of the best-selling books on Japan. Consequently, the Japanese people came to be viewed as a people of loyalty and valor. Still, Nitobe’s view of Japan as fully-modernized was not well received. Many viewed Bushido as a feudal remnant of old Japan and as obstructing its development in a modern society. In all, contrary to his intention, Nitobe’s Bushido plantedan image of Japan as a nation with long military tradition, still influenced by the feudal remnants of Bushi, the old military ruling class.
