The purpose of this study was to review the results of studies on Korean modern history performed from 2010 to 2011 during the first centennial of forced annexation. The results of the review revealed that 100th anniversary events such as the Ahn Jung-Geun Revolution issue and martyr issue were widely studied. Because these studies were done in honor of the commemoration event, there were worries regarding context but they were meaningful because of the attention paid to issues related to colonization.
Although new theories were not proposed in relation to Korean modern history in 2010 and 2011, the studies searched for various points that were already proposed. King Gojong was particularly well-studied but while there were many studies about is life, worries persist about modernity and autonomy with regard to evaluation of the larger issue of the Daehan Empire.
Studies deeply involved with issues related to civilization such as Dongdoseogi and Wiseongcheoksa when considering the connection between tradition and modern thought. In addition, the area of Korean history was enlarged after 2010. The studies mentioned the issue of foreigners residing in Joseon, especially Japanese, and the study of Koreans residing overseas country which went beyond the scope of independence movement history. Although the studies on Korean modern history were not outstanding in 2010 and 2011, it can be said that they went beyond the scope of studies on Korean history in the 20th century.
