The purpose of this study was to examine whether there would be any gaps among female undergraduate students in self-esteem and satisfaction level with their somatotype according to the amount of physical activities. It’s basically meant to detennine the relationship of the amount of physical activities to self-esteem and somatotype satisfaction level in order to provide useful information on the mediating roles of the amount of the physical activities of college students and how to help them lead a sound campus life.
The subjects in this study were the female students who were selected by random sampling from a college located in the city of A. Mter a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 318 respondents were analyzed. An exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and regression analysis were carried out by utilizing the statistical package PASW WIN 18.0. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, there were significant differences in self-esteem according to the amount of physical activities. The group that was very active were significantly ahead of the inactive group in terms of general self-esteem, social self-esteem and school-related self-esteem.
Second, there were significant differences in somatotype satisfaction according to the amount of physical activities. The highly active group was significantly more satisfied than the inactive group.
Third, the amount of physical activities had a significant positive correlation to self-esteem and somatotype satisfaction.
Fourth, the amount of physical activities exerted a significant positive influence on self-esteem and somatotype satisfaction.
The findings of the study showed the relationship of the amount of physical activities to self-esteem and somatotype satisfaction. In the future, more extensive research should be implemented by selecting a wide variety of dependent variables in addition to self-esteem and somatotype satisfaction that were covered in this study, and psychological, social and physiological variables related to the amount of physical activities should be investigated as well.
