Korean churches are currently facing a crisis. Unbelievers do not trust the church, pastors, and church members. I have considered why Korean churches have not been respected by non-Christians for a long time now. I think that the reason is that the church has come to loseits essence. We must recover the essence of the Church and of Christianity.
I believe that the role model of the contemporary Korean Church is John Wesley. Although he was not a perfect pastor in his lifetime, he left a large inheritancefor Korean Methodists to pursue. One of the most important inheritances is ‘holiness,’ especially ‘social holiness’. In response to this prejudice, I began this dissertation with this question: “How can I transform a young adult group by movement of the social holiness?’
Above all, I quoted from the Bible for the scriptural basis of social holiness in chapter 1 and dealt with the movement and practices of John Wesley and the early Methodists in chapters 2 - 4. These parts form the basis of my theological extrapolation. In chapter 5, I briefly wrote social holiness in Korean ‘Minjung Theology’ which has occurred in Korea.
Next, I have been working on projects, related to this dissertation, with some young people in my young adult group. I have tried several things ? sermons, offering, service club <Dream Tree>, and summer bible school for children. I think these projects have beensomewhat successful. I dare to say that my young adult group has developed a mature attitude through these social holiness projects and they have admitted themselves to inner change. However we are not satisfied with the results. We will continue to move toward greater maturity.
I have found new possibilities for the transformation of Korean churches by means of the social holiness movement which John Wesley and the early Methodists began. It is my deep desire and prayer that all the churches may see the hope for transformation of their congregations by movement of the social holiness.
