The culture of the early Iron epoch in maritime areas (沿海洲) and Yanbian (延邊), which are now in the northeastern part of North Korea, was divided into the Dankyul (團結)-Krounovka culture and the Poltse culture of the maritime area. The bearers of these cultures had developed their own into the complex societies in the second and first centuries B.C.E. And also they may be compared to ethnic groups such as the Northern Okjo (北沃沮), the Yilou (?婁), the Dankyul-Krounovka culture, and the Poltse culture of the maritime areas.
According to the The History of the Three Kingdoms, Koguryo campaigned progressively North Okjo from 28 B.C.E. into the first century A.D., in managing fortresses in the Yanbian area centered in Hunchun (琿春). In Yanbian area we can confirm the remains of fortresses through the 108 mountain fortresses (山城) and flatland fortresses (平地城). But among these fortresses, only from 10 th 28 fortresses were built by Koguryo. This show that Koguryo dominated the Yanbian area not by the mountain fortress system, that is the military system, but by the flatland fortresses system. Koguryo’s effective assimilation policy in the Yanbian area completely dissimilated the traditional Dankyul-Krounovka Culture.
