Residential buildings in South Korea have aimed to reduce heating and cooling energy since 2012 by reinforcing energy performance criteria on new buildings. They are planned to be established in ‘Passive House Level (energy-efficiency by 60% or above) and Zero Energy House from 2017 and 2025, respectively. Development for building certification programs and low-energy architectural technology are also briskly performed. However, essential factors on energy-saving buildings are not dealt with basically due to shortage of experts in the field, which causes much difficulty in expanding the distribution of energy-saving buildings. The article herein introduces passive building experts(Certified Passive House Designer, CPHD) and training programs that are conducted in Institute of Passive Zero Energy Building for those interested in passive buildings. The passive house is a result of environment-friendly architecture concept to resolve global climate change and energy problems. Beginning in Germany, Passive House stands for energy-saving buildings that are recently expanded to the world, mostly in European countries including Austria and Switzerland. As the passive house insulates very well, it does not need general heating systems, which is very low in annual heating demand. By heating supply air in heat recovery ventilation system, the minimum required heating energy can be actually provided. Far more than 10,000 Passive Houses have been built all over Europe - buildings, whose space heating demand equals only about one tenth compared to the average building stock. The Passive House Institute has developed ‘the Certified Passive House Designer/Consultant’ certificate so that special qualifications in the field of particularly energy-efficient construction can be substantiated. There are two methods of attaining the Passive House Designer certificate (Written Examination and Qualification by means of a Passive House project). In order to attain the “Passive House Designer” certificate, it is necessary to provide proof of a qualification that allows the holder to carry out planning of buildings or technical building services at his or her own responsibility. For the training program for passive building experts, a prerequisite is to understand ISO13790. Next, the program deals with substantial, reasonable methodology to implement passive architecture. Therefore, information relevant to the CPHD is not only about experts of Europe or training courses, but also about necessary items to implement passive architecture, building energy performance rating, and zero energy building in South Korea. Herein, local climate, available building materials and components, and construction methods of South Korea are also dealt with, and the experts who very well understands these factors stated above are the Korean CPHD.
