This study was intended to analyze understanding and recognition of nutrition labeling of elementary school students. About seventy two percent of the subjects responded that had seen nutrition labeling, and those with higher standard of living and mothers with higher level of education were more likely to have seen the labeling. The items the respondents were most curious about among the nutrition labeling of snacks were in the order of 42.3% fat, 18.6% vitamins, 13.9% protein, 11.7% sugar, 10.6% calorie, and 2.9% minerals. The recognition level of nutrition labeling was overall higher in female students than male students, and the majority of students responded that they understand the nutrition labeling information somewhat, and while 70% responded that they knew what to look for in nutrition labeling, 70% responded they did not choose good foods by reading the nutrition labeling. 50% responded that all nutrition labeling information is correct, and 60% responded checking nutrition labeling is help to health.
In conclusion, the overall understanding level for nutrition education appears to be high, while there was low recognition for choosing good food products, indicating that it was not being utilized well practically.
