This study examines a new way of reproducing colonial modernity by focusing on the film ‘Private Eye’(2009). The past literary and film works tended to describe colonial modernity with the dichotomy of ‘Japanese exploitation versus national resistance’. On the contrary, recent works about the colonial past attempt to overcome this simple dichotomy. ‘Private Eye’ also does so by reproducing colonial past within the genre convention of detective film.
This study about ‘Private Eye’ particularly pays attention to the representations of colonial modernity including a newspaper company, circus troupe and back streets. It also analyzes the meaning of chasing a criminal within the context of colonial modernity. It can be concluded that such themes as child prostitution and drug trafficking in the film are used as the indicator of the corruption of the colonial power.
