Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of "task paradigms" (AX vs. AXB) and "the inter-stimulus interval (ISI)" (500 ms vs. 1000 ms vs. 1500 ms) on the perception of native phonemic and allophonic contrasts among native speakers of Korean. Results of Experiment 1 indicated that discrimination accuracy of the allophonic contrast was higher in the AX than in the AXB paradigm; No difference in perceptual accuracy between the two paradigms for the phonemic contrast was found. The Experiment 2 and Experiment 3 investigated the effects of ISI on the discrimination of the two contrast types under the AXB (Experiment 2) and AX (Experiment 3) paradigms respectively. However, these experiments failed to show any ISI effects on the discrimination of native sound categories regardless of the task paradigm (AX or AXB), suggesting that the 500 ms vs. 1500 ms dichotomy as short vs. long ISI should be investigated further, as an influence upon specific perception tests.
