Born as a theory of social conflicts between rational agents, game theory has been expanding its domain of application. Attempts have been made by linguists or philosophers to show that game theory can be instrumental in dealing with semantic (and/or pragmatic) phenomena. However, the results are limited in scope due to the misunderstanding of the nature of 'language game'. Unlike other types of games discussed in those game theory textbooks, 'language game' has its unique characters to make a raw application of game theory in the realms of semantics not only difficult but also unfruitful. The aim of this paper is to examine linguistic applications of game theory by Hintikka and Parikh and to show that there are some problems to be solved before the two theories work together to account for strategic inferences and interaction involved in human communication.
