The main goal of this study is to introduce urban rain detention storage types and to explore their functionality in the view of urban stormwater management. The study site is a highly urbanized and flooded city in Gyeonggi-Do. The employed research methods are literature review, statistics, GIS, and LTHIA(Long Term Hydrologic Impact Analysis). Results show that 1) for the sound stormwater management under the 100mm/hr rain event, the city of Gwang Myeong needs urban rain detention storages with the volume of 11,606 ton, 2) the storage volume is managed with the multi use of urban infrastructure facilities including road, park, school yard, roof top. It means that flooding resilient environment might be feasible even under the heavy rain(100mm/hr) through the strategic use of urban infrastructure facilities.
Based on the results, several policy implications are addressed. These are mostly to do lists: 1) share of runoff volume between the public and private, 2) review of municipalities" rain code for the issue of roof top stroage-building structure, 3) strategic review for the use of cisterns, 4) strategy for the use of decentralized rain detention storage, particularly, in upland, so called the area resulting in flooding, 5) development of emergency evacuation plan, and 6) feasibility study for the multi use of roads and streets.
