A striking phenomenon of the rise of the Thai nation-state and the formation of modem Thai society is the visibility of Thai women in the teaching profession. Recent recipients of education themselves, women now form a huge portion of the teaching corps in Thailand"s education system. Their increasing presence in the teaching profession is a significant phenomenon, revealing that Thai women are making the crossover from traditional role of mothering and providing care to their own children and families to their newly acquired public role of teaching and care-providing to all Thai children. This crossover from domestic and maternal nurturance to public and patriarchal identified institution, however, creates potential conflicts. Thai women teachers, because they are under state jurisdiction, have left the leadership role of the domestic realm and become part of the state bureaucracy. This task of educating Thai youngsters putting forth to Thai women teachers is even complicated by Thailand"s ethnically diverse population. By examining the practices and self-perceived roles of Thai women teachers of the hilltribe students, this study demonstrates how Thai women necessarily construct their identity out of Thailand"s cultural institutions, one of the most prominent of these being the national institution of motherhood. Although the maternal role might seem to necessitate an identity that is first and foremost submissive to paternal authority, my study reveals that individual Thai women teachers may exploit their maternal identity to engage in active and complicated roles at the welfare schools, sometimes promoting their own alternative agendas over those specified by the state. In the role of "second" mothers who assume the responsibility of molding young students into productive and cooperative citizens, they draw from their own personal experiences and observations and their personally held values to craft individualistic, sometimes resistant versions of a maternally inflected professional identity.
