About 20% of energy in Korea was consumed by households, of which 58% was used by households at home in 2010. The aim of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the energy consumption of the household sector. The panel model was set by a balanced panel data for 7 metropolitan areas & 9 provinces and for the period of 2001~2010. Household energy consumption per capita is used as the dependent variable and characteristics of the household and consumption pattern, physical environmental factors, and the energy price are selected as the explanatory variables. The important findings can be summarized as follows: First, household energy consumption was influenced by household size, the ratio of the old-aged, female economic participation rate, net population density, and the ratio of apartment and so on. Second, electric energy consumption was affected by energy price and level of income. Third, household size affected negatively on residential energy consumption and positively on vehicle miles traveled. The result of this study suggests that the effect of policies reducing energy consumption may vary by energy sources and regions, providing the policy implication to reduce the household-level energy consumption in the future of the era of climate change.
