Preservation of ancient historical documents is essential and need of the hour. Since the inscriptions reveal the information regarding the civilized past, the deciphering of such inscriptions will be very vital. The poor visibility and noise are also some of the facts, which are leading to problems in deciphering of these inscriptions. Hence this addresses the requirement of thorough preprocessing of the images of the documents before the actual recognition is taken up. Hence in this paper a simple and effective technique has been proposed to enhance the document image. The proposed method combines the application of spatial filters and Singular value Decomposition and adaptive Thresholding techniques to enhance the given image.
