Wendell Berry, like creation-centered Christian ecotheologians, argues that nature as God’s creation has His holy spirit and the material part of nature is holy as well. Rather than introverted interests such as the sin and redemption of soul that fall/redemption theology prevalent so far emphasizes, he turns to creation that he thinks is the revelation of God. For him, nature is the loved creation of God which He was pleased with in the beginning and has been joining His continuous creation. The goodness or blessing of creation is, for Berry, no other than that of the creativity of God’s panentheistic energy (or process) of life and the joy accompanied by it. Creativity is ontological interpretation about God’s image. The body of nature as well as its spirit joins the creation and so it is holy. The Incarnation and Resurrection of Christ confirm the holiness of body. In the creativity of life, death means another creation carrying resurrection and so there is no final and evil death. The body of creation, as the body of Lord who divides his body, has the moments of endless creation and resurrection. Therefore, for Berry, “our destruction of nature is the most horrid blasphemy.” By confirming creation’s holiness expressed in the essence of Christianity, Berry solves the dualism between God and creation, human beings and nature, and spirit and body.
