Shiki Masaoka leaves many works on a Haiku, a Tanka, an essay, a novel, many aspects including the criticism during the 36-year-old short life. Particularly, Shiki presented Haiku innovation luck through the new original method called “The sketch idea(Shaseiron)" for Japanese tradition poetry. It is commented on as big achievements on Japanese modern literature.
In this report, I considered the work of a Haiku and Tanka that expressed an attack of tuberculosis that was the cause of the short life of Shiki and worldly desires and a tangle between life and death with it. I pick the work which a viewpoint of life and death of Shiki expresses in the work, and this report is to consider the change of a viewpoint of life and death according to time. The change of a viewpoint of life and death that this report considered is a change process of the consciousness about the death of Shiki. The change of a viewpoint of life and death of Shiki was simple condolence to feel through death of another person early. However, Shiki is infected with fatal tuberculosis. Then Shiki feels death as a thing of own. And what"s called death rises as the existence that the body is the most familiar to of the life of Shiki. And Shiki left many of a Haiku and a Tanka that featured the theme of death. Shiki greeted the last of the life to the brink that died while doing its best for creation of the literature.
