Objectives:This study aimed to investigate the relationship among suicidal ideation, addictive mobile phone use and depressive symptoms in bullies who experienced school violence.
Methods:The study subjects consisted of 218 adolescents in The Foundation for Preventing Youth Violence(FPYV) after school violence. The participants conducted self-report questionnaire for addictive mobile phone use, Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-Junior(SIQ-JR) and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale(CES-D). Pearson correlation, logistic regression and path analysis were performed to evaluate the relationship.
Results:67 subjects(30.7%) and 46 subjects(21.1%) of total participants were regarded as having clinically significant depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. SIQ-JR score were correlated with addictive mobile phone use score (r=0.291, p<0.001) and CES-D score(r=0.567, p<0.001). CES-D score were significant risk factor for suicidal ideation (O.R=1.12, 95% CI= 1.08-1.16). We also found that the depressive symptoms directly related to suicidal ideation(standardized coefficient=0.53, p<0.05) and addictive mobile phone use(standardized coefficient=0.38, p<0.05) in bullies of school violence using the path analysis.
Conclusion:The rate of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation are relatively high and the increased depressive symptoms are associated with addictive mobile phone use in bullies of school violence. There is need to consider bullies as a victim who need appropriate intervention in order to prevent subsequent suicide.
